SmartThings can reduce repeated household checks through approachable routines while still offering a path to more detailed rules. It fits people who want meaningful automation depth without making every family member maintain a technical system.

Best for: Device-based routines, phone presence, shared household states, and people who want an approachable app with room for advanced logic.

Not for: Assuming every supported device exposes every capability, assuming every routine runs locally, or using one phone signal as proof that the home is empty.

My experience boundary

I moved to SmartThings after outgrowing Alexa’s routine limitations. SmartThings supported many more device types and protocols, including Z-Wave, and gave me room to build out my first large smart home. I enjoyed that period and found the platform much more capable than the system I had left.

My installation eventually grew beyond 100 devices and became noticeably slower. I also reached limits in the routine tools for more advanced scenarios. Later, when SmartThings changed its driver model, drivers I depended on were not all available on the new path. Those are observations from my installation and migration period, not claims that every current SmartThings home will have the same performance or driver gaps.

I used SharpTools.io dashboards with SmartThings on wall-mounted tablets around the house. That kept frequently used controls visible and approachable without making a phone app the only interface.

Where SmartThings fits

SmartThings works well when a device state can be expressed as an IF condition and the desired response as a THEN action. A manually run routine can provide an explicit household override when an automatic signal is late, missing, or wrong.

SmartThings was a meaningful step up for me because broader device and protocol support removed many of the compatibility limits I had encountered. Before building a large system today, I would still verify current drivers for every important device and test performance with representative routines rather than assuming my older experience predicts the current platform.

Automation building blocks

SmartThings Routines use IF conditions and THEN actions. Multiple conditions can require all conditions or any condition. Manually run routines can be launched independently or used by another routine.

More advanced SmartThings Rules can use device and location state, logical comparisons, changes, commands, and waits.

Every useful option depends on the device’s exposed capabilities. A protocol or compatibility logo does not prove that the exact attribute or command needed by a recipe is available.

Build and verify one routine

  1. Confirm the device exposes the required attributes and commands.
  2. Create the smallest IF and THEN path.
  3. Choose All or Any conditions deliberately.
  4. Add a manually run override before enabling presence-based behavior.
  5. Test every resident independently when presence is involved.
  6. Check event history to identify the condition that blocked a run.
  7. Disconnect the internet to determine whether the complete rule remains local.
  8. Move to an advanced Rule only when a routine cannot express the required memory or recheck.

Local and cloud behavior

SmartThings Rules run locally only when every involved device feature and service supports local execution. A routine that combines locally connected devices with a cloud integration may still depend on the SmartThings Cloud. Test the whole automation, not just the radio used by one device.

Do all SmartThings routines run locally?

Can SmartThings tell when everyone has left?

Why did I move from SmartThings to Hubitat?

My SmartThings home had grown beyond 100 devices, performance had slowed, advanced routines still had limits, and the driver-model transition left gaps for devices I used. A whole-house remodel gave me a practical opportunity to rebuild from scratch, so I moved to Hubitat.
