Make the smart home predictable for guests
Use one visible Guest-mode control to keep wall switches normal, preserve useful lighting and safety behavior, and pause personal or surprising automation until a host confirms the visit has ended.
Best for: Overnight visitors, house sitters, relatives, babysitters, cleaners, and gatherings where guests do not carry tracked household devices.
Not for: Inferring a guest from an unknown phone, disabling urgent safety alerts, hiding physical controls, or weakening locks and security without a separate household decision.
Why this exists
A home that works only for people with an app is not guest-friendly. Visitors should be able to use a wall switch, adjust comfort within normal limits, and move through the house without lights turning off because their phone is not tracked.
Guest mode is an explicit household state, not a guess. It protects privacy, prevents false Away activation, and narrows routines that assume everyone knows how the home normally behaves.
Logic
- Trigger: A host explicitly starts Guest mode and optionally records an expected departure time.
- Conditions: No emergency mode is active, and the host confirms which rooms or routines the visit affects.
- Action: Mark guests present, prevent phone-only Away activation, keep simple lighting and physical controls active, mute non-urgent personal announcements, and pause routines that expose private information or assume resident schedules.
- Wait / timeout: At the expected departure time, remind a host to extend or end Guest mode.
- Stop condition: A host confirms that the visit ended, then normal Home behavior resumes without replaying missed actions.
- Manual override: A clearly labeled control can extend, narrow, or end Guest mode at any time.

Setup notes
- Create one Guest-present state with a responsible host and expected end time.
- Add a Guest-mode check to Away logic before changing lights, climate, locks, alarms, or cameras.
- List every routine that speaks, displays personal data, uses resident schedules, or changes shared rooms.
- Decide whether each routine stays active, uses a simpler guest behavior, or pauses.
- Keep urgent alerts and the physical controls out of the mute list.
- Add an expiry reminder that asks a host to extend or end the visit.
- When Guest mode ends, restore normal rules without replaying queued announcements or device changes.
- Test with a person who did not build the smart home and does not carry a tracked resident phone.

Advanced features
Scope by rooms
An overnight guest may need a bedroom, bathroom, hall, and kitchen profile. A dinner guest may need only shared rooms. Use named scopes rather than one ever-growing global exception list.
Add a guest instruction card
Place a short card near the entry or guest room explaining normal wall controls, thermostat use, nighttime path lighting, Wi-Fi access, and how to reach a host. Do not make automation knowledge a requirement.
Record who owns the mode
Show which host started Guest mode so expiry and end reminders reach the right person. Ownership also prevents one resident from ending another resident’s active visit accidentally.
Failure modes
- Away mode activates while a guest remains: Make Guest-present a hard occupancy input, not a notification-only hint.
- Lights turn off while guests are still: Increase conservative timeouts and keep wall switches authoritative.
- Personal information is announced: Audit spoken and dashboard routines, then pause or scope them during Guest mode.
- Urgent alerts become quiet: Maintain a separate allowlist for safety, medical, leak, and security incidents.
- Guest mode remains on for days: Send an expiry prompt to the owning host without ending the mode silently.
- Normal routines replay after mode ends: Discard missed scheduled actions and resume only on the next real trigger.
- A guest changes a device manually: Treat the manual change as intentional and do not immediately reverse it.
- The hub is unavailable: Wall switches, thermostat controls, keys, and safety devices continue to work normally.

Should guest mode disable all automations?
No. Keep simple lighting, physical controls, climate safety, leak alerts, smoke and carbon-monoxide alerts, and other urgent protection active. Pause only behavior that would surprise guests or expose personal information.
How does guest mode prevent false Away activation?
Treat the explicit guest-present state as occupancy even when every tracked resident phone leaves. Away mode must wait until a host ends guest mode or otherwise confirms the home is empty.
Should guest mode end automatically?
