An empty house does not mean the thermostat can use any temperature that saves energy. Pets may still be home. Pipes run through colder spaces than the thermostat. Someone may have set a manual hold for a reason.
The safe rule is simple: confirm Away, apply only a modest setback inside household-approved limits, and let the thermostat enforce those limits even if the automation fails.

Is the home confidently empty?
Phone location alone is not enough. Use the same delayed, guest-safe decision as the Away mode recipe. A child, guest, caregiver, or person without a tracked phone needs an obvious way to keep the house in Home mode.

Is a setback safe right now?

Pets are occupants
A pet home alone still needs a safe environment. Do not use the most aggressive Away setback just because no tracked person is home.
